Zeocin reagent is a member of the bleomycin antibiotic family. Its resistance is conferred by the Shble gene encoding a 13665 Dalton protein. In cells expressing this protein, Zeocin is unable to bind and cleave cellular DNA. Zeocin is effective for most aerobic cells and can be used to select mammalian and insect cell lines, yeast, and bacteria. When selecting cells, the dosage of Zeocin is 50-2000 ug/ml (usually 300 ug/ml), depending on the cell type.
